Makerspace Showcase
Te Āhuru Mōwai was filled with creativity, conversation, and community on Saturday 13 June 2026 as visitors gathered for the first ever Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) Makerspace Showcase.
The event brought together a diverse range of local makers, creators, families, schools, community organisations, and small businesses, all of whom had used the Makerspace's tools, resources, support, or opportunities to help bring their ideas to life. The showcase celebrated not only their work, but also the role the Makerspace played in enabling them to pursue their passions, develop new skills, and grow their ventures. Visitors had the opportunity to meet these local makers, learn about their journeys, see how they had utilised the Makerspace, and purchase unique handmade and digitally created products.
From detailed architectural models and te reo Māori creations to 3D-printed designs and custom vinyl-cut book covers, the event highlighted the breadth of talent and innovation within the community. The quality and craftsmanship on display reflected the skill, dedication, and passion of the makers, demonstrating the impact of the Makerspace in supporting local creativity and enterprise.
Attendees enjoyed a range of MCHL interactive activities throughout the event. The popular Sticker Rally encouraged children to visit exhibitors and ask questions about their displays and workwhile collecting stickers from around the event. Participants received a prize at the completion of the rally and had the opportunity to create a free personalised badge.
Visitors were also invited to explore the Makerspace itself and take part in an Etch a Glass activity. For a small fee, participants could create a personalised keepsake by selecting a design and adding their name to a glass.
Marie Willis, MCHL Community Programmes Manager, said the showcase was designed to demonstrate what is possible when people have access to creative tools and support.
“The Makerspace Showcase is about sharing the incredible projects being created within our community. Many people visit the space but aren't always sure where to start or what they can make. We hope seeing these projects inspires others to explore their own ideas and make use of the Makerspace.”
“The Makerspace is a valuable community resource that supports individuals, businesses, organisations, and anyone looking to create something meaningful, practical, or unique.”
The Makerspace is part workshop, part creative studio. Open to the public, it provides bookable access to tools, technology, digital design software, and crafting equipment, including 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl design, sewing, sublimation printing, badge making, and electronic tinkering. No experience is needed, with Makerspace Specialists available to guide and support people as they learn.
Whether you are starting from scratch or already have a project in mind, the Makerspace is a place to explore ideas, try something new, and make something yourself.
