Sewing & Overlocking

What is a sewing machine?

A sewing machine is a handy tool that helps you stitch fabric and materials together using thread. Think of it as a tiny, motorised sewing assistant that can sew much faster and more precisely than you could by hand.

What is an overlocker?

An overlocker is a specialised sewing machine that creates a clean, finished edge on fabric. It’s particularly useful for working with knits and stretchy materials that tend to fray or ravel.

A regular sewing machine typically makes a singular line of stitching. An overlocker folds the raw edge of the fabric underneath itself and sews it together with three needles and threads simultaneously trimming off any excess fabric. This creates a professional looking reinforced seam.

We have a Bernina B325 that features:

  • a semi-automatic threader makes threading the needle easier than ever
  • 23 different decorative stitches, cross stitches & more (includes the alphabet)
  • Sew buttonholes automatically
  • Slide-on extension table for more workspace

We have a Bernette B64 Airlock Overlocker that features:

  • Automatic air threader for looper threads (please ask us for help if you haven’t used this function before)
  • 16 different stitches to choose from
  • Free Hand System (FHS) including knee lifter

In the Makerspace we have black and white thread for both the sewing machine and the overlocker. If you want to use specialty thread, you will need to bring this with you. We also have dressmaking scissors, an iron (and ironing board), pinking shears, a cutting mat, rotary cutter, sewing gauge, quick unpick, and spare needles and bobbins.

We have no material available for purchase in the Makerspace, you will need to bring your projects with you (including patterns).

We love to see the creativity users bring to the Makerspace so there is no cost to use the sewing machine or overlocker. We do recommend bookings to ensure the machines are available for you when you want to use it.
