Tractors, Adventure, and a Life Well Lived
Do you have a passion, hobby, or collection you are proud of? Manawatū Community Hub Libraries is inviting individuals, groups, and hobbyists to showcase their treasures in its free display cabinets and one current display shows just how inspiring a shared collection can be.
Patrick Nolan isn’t your average hub visitor. He’s an adventurer, skydiver, Vietnam veteran, Air Cadets patron and devoted collector of tractors. His miniature tractor collection currently on display at the library is more than a cabinet of models; it’s a window into a life shaped by service, exploration and curiosity.
Patrick’s favourite piece, “Big Fergie”, echoes the tractors used by Sir Edmund Hillary during Antarctic expeditions machines stripped down, fitted with tracks and built to handle icy terrain. Some of those historic tractors even returned to New Zealand.
His collection spans three generations and includes classic Fun Ho! Toys. Manufactured in Stratford, these toys are modelled on iconic New Zealand farm vehicles. A detailed Fun Ho! booklet sits alongside the display, documenting the tractors and adding another layer of history for visitors to explore. Each piece reflects both New Zealand’s farming heritage and Patrick’s long held passion for collecting.
Patrick served 29 years in the Army as a carpenter and joiner before transferring to the Artillery for service in Vietnam. He later spent 16 years as a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London, an experience he shared with his wife of 59 years. In 1991, he completed a summer season at Scott Base in Antarctica, supporting logistics and search and rescue operations for scientists working in challenging conditions long before digital planning tools were the norm.
Patrick recently turned 80 and is celebrating 60 years since his first parachute jump, a passion he has continued to pursue throughout his life. He also volunteers locally at the Coach House Museum and mounts medals, continuing his lifelong commitment to history and community.
Patrick’s display is more than a collection of tractors. It’s a reminder that passion, service and adventure can span a lifetime and that sharing personal stories enriches our community.
If you have a collection you would like to share, visit Manawatū Community Hub Libraries and chat with a staff member, or email mchl.bookings@mdc.govt.nz with your details.
