Space For Youth

We recognise the Youth in the Manawatū need a place to call their own, so we created a Space for the Youth (Te Whanga) at Te Āhuru Mōwai.

This space is designated for rangatahi (youth) aged 11+ and is available during staffed hours and through Open Plus.

The room, known as Te Whanga (the bay), features a Mangōpare (hammerhead shark) design on the glass. Mangōpare represents strength, leadership, courage, and tenacity.

We offer a range of activities and services tailored to the needs of our youth community. Whether you're looking for a place to hang out with friends, seek information, or find support, our Te Whanga space will serve as a true sanctuary for our youth.

The environment is lively and energetic, offering ample chances for learning, development, and enjoyment. Our vision is to create a space where every young individual is appreciated, listened to, and encouraged to achieve their maximum potential.

Our core values guide everything we do:

Whanaungatanga (Community and Connection): We foster a strong sense of belonging and mutual support among all rangatahi.

Manaakitanga (Care and Respect): We create a welcoming environment where everyone is treated with kindness and respect.

Rangatiratanga (Leadership and Empowerment): We encourage and support youth leadership, helping young people to develop their skills and confidence.

Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship and Responsibility): We promote responsibility and care for our community and environment.

We partner with others to bring in programmes, opportunities and events for youth to participate in. These will often take place in the other meeting rooms at Te Āhuru Mōwai.

The New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) partnered with the Manawatū District Council (MDC) to finance a new basketball hoop, backboard, and half court. It will be located on the Hobson Street side outside of Te Āhuru Mōwai.
