Open Plus Service Revolutionises Access

Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) Open Plus, offers extended after-hours access to its facility, Te Āhuru Mōwai. Since its launch in July 2024, the service allows members aged 16 and older to use the library during unstaffed hours, making services available from 9:30am to 11pm daily, including Sundays and public holidays.

Open Plus has proven a hit, with over 290 members and over 1940 swipe ins. The extended hours give individuals the chance to utilise library resources like Wi-Fi, computers, and borrowing of items at a time that suits them. Versus staffed facility hours. It also means that the community gets better value out of its community facilities by being available to the community outside of the staffed facility hours. The Open Plus service reflects the evolving role of libraries as community hubs.

"Open Plus is a game-changer for our community," says Adie Johansen, Community Services Manager, Manawatū District Council. "It provides greater flexibility and support for people to engage with the library services, whether they’re studying, working, or simply looking for a peaceful place to relax. We are proud to offer this service and to see its positive impact on the lives of our residents."

That positive impact is reflected in the experiences of everyday users. For Vivienne Manning, the extended access has become a valued part of her routine.

The library is a peaceful sanctuary where I can write, reflect, or simply be,” says Manning, a regular Open Plus user. “Using Open Plus gives me the freedom to visit in the evenings, and that quiet joy is a great comfort. I’m so grateful to have this space in our community.”

While the service benefits people of all ages, it has been popular among older adults. More than 35% of Open Plus users are aged 65 or older, providing them with a peaceful space to relax, socialise, or simply enjoy some solitude. Safety is a priority with the Open Plus service.

By offering flexible, secure access to services, MCHL is setting a new standard for what libraries can be. It is clear that the library is transforming into an inclusive space that meets the diverse needs of the community.
