Be Smart. Be Safe. Be Ready.
What would you do if a moment suddenly didn’t feel right? If your instincts told you something was off?
It’s a question many of us have asked. These self-defence workshops aim to answer, equipping local youth and adults with the skills, awareness, and confidence to respond when it matters most.
The Kung Fu School in partnership with Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) are offering free workshops. Spaces are still available for the Adults Self-Defence Workshop (ages 16+) on 28 March from 5pm – 7pm. Registration is required.
The Youth Self-Defence Workshop has one space available, highlighting community demand. Taken by black belt specialist Sarah Taylor from The Kung Fu School (Feilding), each session combines theory with hands-on techniques, helping participants understand how to assess situations, trust their instincts, and take appropriate action. From recognising early warning signs to learning how to avoid danger where possible, the focus was firmly on awareness and empowerment.
“MCHL’s Community Programmes Manager Marie Willis says the workshops are part of a wider commitment to community wellbeing, delivered in partnership with local organisations. By collaborating in this way, we are supporting our community to access skills and opportunities that contribute to a safer community for everyone.”
Participants explore real life scenarios from walking alone to dealing with unwanted attention and practice simple, effective strategies such as staying aware of surroundings, planning, and maintaining communication with others. It’s a practical workshop to empower people of all ages.
