Connecting Communities Across the District
Have you ever wondered why we are called “Libraries” rather than “Library.” The reason is simple: Manawatū Community Hub Libraries is one of seven libraries throughout the district. Alongside the Feilding Hub, we have six more community libraries serving as important spaces throughout the district where stories and connections come to life.
MCHL regularly visits with books and resources to our community libraries located in Āpiti, Himatangi, Kimbolton, Pohangina, Rongotea, and Tangimoana ensuring the collections are regularly updated. These libraries are operated by community volunteers, with their own collections alongside the materials MCHL regularly provides. Their opening hours may vary, but each plays a valued role in local connection.
Among these special places is the Kimbolton Library, a true local treasure. Housed in one of New Zealand’s smallest library buildings, this one room cottage was built prior to 1900 but became a public library in 1927. Despite its modest size, the Kimbolton Library continues to serve its community with charm nearly a century later. Earlier this year, the library adopted a new access system through MCHL’s Open Plus initiative, allowing members to use their library card rather than a key. This upgrade offers a more convenient and secure way to gain access, reflecting MCHL’s commitment to innovation while preserving the character and history of our libraries.
Kimbolton Library is now open from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday, for enrolled Open Plus members. Those wishing to utilise Kimbolton Library can sign up at MCHL at 64 Stafford Street, Feilding, during staffed hours. MCHL continues to ensure that even the smallest towns have access to books and resources with the essential help of our valued volunteers at each community library offering a welcoming space and access to literacy and learning.
