Dive Into Reading: Over 1,450 Books Read!
Tamariki across the Manawatū District dived into stories this summer with the Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) Dive into Reading Summer Programme. From picture books to chapter books, children were turning pages, writing reviews, and going on new adventures all while beating the dreaded “summer reading slump” and keeping their skills sharp over the school break.
A total of 149 children enrolled in the programme, with over half completing the book review check-in challenge and earning their invitation to the finale celebration, where they each received a free book.
In total, 246 books were read by children to complete the attendance challenge for the Summer Bash, contributing to an incredible overall achievement for the Summer Reading Programme. Some children took their reading even further, with 48 completers rising to the ultimate challenge by reading 26 books each to earn an additional entry for the Ultimate Summer Reader Prize. This outstanding effort meant that just shy of 1,500 books were read and enjoyed by our tamariki over the summer.
Marie Willis, Community Programmes Manager at MCHL, said: "Children can really lose a bit of ground over the summer if they’re not reading, so it’s amazing to see them diving into books like this. Dive into Reading makes it fun, with prizes, check-ins, and a pool party to celebrate. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they discover new stories and share them with friends and whānau."
The programme wrapped up with a splash at the Summer Bash at the Makino Aquatic Centre. Children bounced on inflatables, danced to the DJ, grabbed giveaways, and collected their book prizes. Special thanks to Jacynda Murray from Tremains Real Estate, for volunteering to cooking on the night and making the celebration extra special.
A huge thank you to everyone who was part of the MCHL Dive into Reading programme! It’s been incredible to see so many children reading, learning, and having fun. And a special shout out goes to our amazing sponsors: Cooper Rapley Lawyers, Domino’s Feilding, Empire Plumbing, Feilding Manchester Lions Club, Feilding Oroua Rotary Club, Homely Property Management, Jacynda Murray – Tremains Real Estate, McDonald’s Feilding, Taylor Made Construction, Home Staging NZ, Team Campbell – Harcourts Real Estate, and Turners Gifts & Luggage, for helping make the programme such a splash.
