From Yarn to Warmth: Knitters Donate 500 items

It’s not every Wednesday morning you see a group of knitters posing with giant inflatable “500” numbers but for the Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL), Have a Yarn Knitting & Crochet Group, this amazing milestone was worth celebrating.

Gathered at Te Āhuru Mōwai, the group celebrated their 500th handmade donation since January this year, supporting local causes such as Manchester House Social Services, the Neonatal Unit at Palmerston North Hospital, and the Cancer Society for Daffodil Day.

“I’ve worked with the group from the start and love the work they do,” said Jenny Webb, Library Experience Representative. “The skill, care, and generosity they bring each week is inspiring.” Jenny has meticulously documented each item that the group has made and donated over time.

The donation includes smock tops, cardigans, vests, hats, blankets, and even teddy bears. Each one carefully made and destined for someone in need.

The group meets every Wednesday morning from 10am to noon. You will find this is where conversation flows as easily as the knitting needles click. Many members say it’s as much about the friendships as the finished items.

With the milestone reached, the knitters are putting out a call for donations of 4ply or 8ply yarn (wool or acrylic) and buttons. 100% wool is particularly sought after for premature and newborn baby items.

“Every ball of wool we receive turns into something useful,” a Have a Yarn member explained, “and it’s nice to think our work brings warm comfort to others.”

If you would like to donate wool or buttons, please drop them at the MCHL front desk. Better yet, join the group and the cause, everyone is welcome.
