Makerspace: Where Innovation Meets Tradition

Looking for a space where creativity and innovation come together? The Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) Makerspace offers a welcoming environment for learning, creating, and exploring new possibilities.

Blending modern technology with traditional craftsmanship, the Makerspace provides access to tools such as sewing machines alongside emerging innovations. A Makerspace Specialist has been experimenting with what can be created with 3D printing tools like yarn bowls. Designs range from playful sheep designs to clever cotton reel shapes making knitting easier and more enjoyable, so makers can focus on their craft.

This spirit of creativity extends into the wider community. Each Wednesday morning during term time, from 9:30am to 12 noon, the MCHL Have a Yarn Knitting & Crochet Group gathers in Te Āhuru Mōwai. The space comes alive with the gentle rhythm of needles and conversation, as people of all abilities share skills, and create together.

This group reflects what MCHL is all about with collaboration, inclusion, and hands-on learning. From experienced knitters mentoring newcomers to participants working alongside caregivers, or simply enjoying the social atmosphere, it’s a place where everyone can belong and contribute.

The group’s partnership with the Makerspace to create these yarn bowls is a great example of old and new technologies coming together. Interested in buying, a yarn bowl or maybe working to design your own? Have a talk to the Makerspace team.

The Makerspace is more than just technology. It’s where ideas take shape, skills are shared, and community connections grow. Whether you are keen to try something new, share ideas, or see innovation in action, the Makerspace is a place to get involved.
