New! Library of Things

Ever dreamed of strumming a guitar, tinkering with a sewing machine, or finally seeing what an eBook reader feels like in your hands without buying one?  You can borrow more than stories from the Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) collection, you can now try these things and create your own.

This October we are turning the page on what it means to be a community hub. At Te Āhuru Mōwai, you are now able to check out tech, toys and more with the launch of the “Library of Things.” This collection consists of items that may be too costly or impractical to purchase for occasional use. “Our collection is evolving to be much more than books. This collection gives people the chance to try something new, refresh an old skill, or simply borrow what they need without the expense of buying,” says Warrick Taylor, Library Services Leader.

The collection includes portable CD players, telescopes, robots, ukeleles and children’s activity kits such as fort builders and games. All items are free to borrow for two weeks, with renewals available. Holds can be placed on any item, and all returns must be made to the Hub’s front counter during staffed hours.

By encouraging borrowing instead of ownership, the Library of Things supports sustainability and resource sharing. It reduces waste, lowers costs for patrons, and opens the door to new hobbies, projects, and creative pursuits. The Library of Things reflects MCHL’s ongoing commitment to provide resources that meet the changing needs of the community which encourage learning and connection.

You are invited to visit Te Āhuru Mōwai and explore this exciting new collection, found near the children’s area within the library. Simply choose a display case from the selection and take it to the MCHL front counter, where a staff member will retrieve the item and issue it for you. Come and discover something new!
