New StoryWalk® Takes Flight in Feilding

Families in Feilding have a fresh reason to lace up their walking shoes and head outdoors, thanks to the latest addition to Manawatū Community Hub Libraries' growing series of StoryWalks®.

The fourth StoryWalk® installation features Pu and Ru’s Bird Beak Clues by Jez Smith and Ned Barraud, a fun and educational tale that encourages young readers to explore the natural world this time, through the eyes and beaks of native birds.

“We’re excited to bring another story to life in our community,” said Marie Willis, Community Hub Programmes Leader. “StoryWalks® create such a magical mix of reading, learning, and enjoying the outdoors. It's a way of connecting with nature, literacy, and whānau, all at once.”

The walk begins just outside Te Āhuru Mōwai, winds over the red bridge and along the path toward the Makino Aquatic Centre outdoor playground, with pages of the story placed at intervals for children and families to read as they go. Along the way, Pu and Ru two feathered friends search for the best bird beak, guided by clues, rhymes, bird facts, and a cheeky joke or two from a mischievous pūkeko.

The story includes Māori bird names and showcases native flora and fauna, deepening its value as an educational experience. Manawatū Community Hub Libraries in collaboration with Parks and Property staff partnered with Scholastic New Zealand to bring this interactive reading adventure to life.

The new StoryWalk® joins three others in the district located at Himatangi Beach, Kōwhai Park, and Mt Lees Reserve. “These walks are unique to our district and are something we’re incredibly proud of,” said Willis. “They leave a legacy of literacy, play, and discovery for future generations.”

The new installation enhances an already popular community area that includes the community hub, basketball court, skatepark, the Makino Aquatic Centre playground and Feilding Lions Mini Golf, making it an all-ages destination for fun and learning.

To experience the StoryWalk®, start outside the children’s outdoor area near Te Āhuru Mōwai, cross the red bridge, and follow the path toward the playground. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy each page along the way.
