Practical Parenting Support
Parents and caregivers across the district have access to free, practical parenting support thanks to funding from the Manawatū District Council Community Development Priority Services Fund. Through this fund, Parentline Manawatū has been able to bring the internationally recognised Triple P – Positive Parenting Programme directly into our local community, hosting interactive workshops and discussion groups at Te Āhuru Mōwai’s meeting rooms.
The Community Development Priority Services Fund supports initiatives that strengthen wellbeing, encourage social connection and improve access to services. Through the fund, Parentline Manawatū is providing practical and accessible parenting support for families with children aged 3 –10 years and teenagers.
The sessions cover common parenting challenges such as managing disobedience, fighting and aggression, reducing family conflict and helping teenagers navigate strong emotions. Delivered in a discussion-based format, the workshops combine video, practical examples and shared experiences to help parents better understand their children’s behaviour and build positive relationships at home.
Parentline Manawatū Manager Raewyn Persson says many parents are simply looking for reassurance and ideas they can use in everyday family life.
“These sessions are about supporting parents, not judging them. They create a space where people can share experiences, learn practical strategies and feel more confident handling the ups and downs that come with raising children,” she says.
Persson says even attending one session can leave parents and caregivers with helpful tips and fresh ideas they can start using at home straight away.
Triple P – Positive Parenting Programme is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading evidence-based parenting programmes. Developed by Professor Matt Sanders and colleagues at The University of Queensland, the programme is now used in more than 25 countries and offers a range of support options for families.
