Dive into Reading - Summer Reading Programme

This summer, read your way to new adventures! Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) is celebrating the pleasure of reading with the fun and free Dive into Reading challenge.

Join the programme from 8 December to 16 January to keep tamariki reading, learning, and exploring over the summer holidays. It’s family-friendly and finishes with a book prize and a splash at the Makino Aquatic Centre Summer Bash. Don’t forget to check out the MCHL Summer School Holiday Programme.

Dive into Reading is designed for tamariki aged pre-school to 11+.

This programme celebrates reading of all abilities whether it's picture books or chapter books, reading alone, being read to, or sharing stories together as a whānau.

These all count!

  1. Register
    Registration is now open until 7 Dec.
  2. Pick up your booklet
  3. Read
    Choose books to read over the summer.
  4. Review three books
    After each book, fill in a Review page:
    • Book Title
    • Author
    • Rating (out of 5 stars)
    • A sentence or a picture about the book
  5. Check-in at the library
    Bring your booklet to the library during one of the check-in times to chat with our MCHL team about what you have been reading.
    • Each check-in earns a special incentive prize and stamp.
    • Once all three reviews are completed you will receive a voucher to exchange for a book prize and free entry to the Summer Bash Pool Party at the Makino Aquatic Centre.
  6. Complete your Reading Log
    Fill in your Reading Log as you go. Work your way through:
    • Bronze
    • Silver
    • Gold
    • Diamond
    • Mythical
    Once you have completed all three book reviews and the Reading Log, submit it by Friday 16 January for a chance to win the Ultimate Summer Reader Prize!

Check-in dates:

  • Thursday 18 Dec
  • Friday 19 Dec
  • Monday 22 Dec
  • Tuesday 6 Jan
  • Wednesday 7 Jan
  • Wednesday 14 Jan
  • Thursday 15 Jan

Visit the library during any of our available check-in sessions to share your reviews and chat with the MCHL team.

Complete all three book reviews and you will receive:

  • Each check-in earns a special small incentive prize.
  • A voucher to exchange for a book prize.
  • Free entry to the Summer Bash Pool Party at the Makino Aquatic Centre.

  • Date: 22 January
  • Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm
  • Location: Makino Aquatic Centre

If you can’t make it to the Summer Bash, don’t worry! Book prizes can be collected from the library from Monday the 26 January.

Reading Log:

Once you have completed all three book reviews and the Reading Log, hand it in by Friday 16 January for a chance to win the Ultimate Summer Reader Prize!
