Growing Together: The Library of Things

Created in response to community interests, the collection opens new opportunities for creativity, discovery, learning and connection. More items will be added throughout the year; we welcome suggestions from MCHL users to guide these additions.

Behind the scenes, MCHL Digital Specialist Warrick Taylor and Content Specialist Kirsty Meads have been working to catalogue and prepare new items, helping ensure fresh resources are ready for the community to borrow. “We are excited to keep expanding our collection of items that give our community access to equipment, technology and experiences they may not otherwise have access too,” the team said.

The Library of Things already includes a variety of items such as musical instruments, eBook readers, portable CD players, a telescope, sewing machines, toys, games, and more. New additions arriving soon include electronic keyboards, digital drum kits, and Shut the Box, a game that encourages maths learning through play.

Families will also be able to enjoy shared experiences with new additions including, family fitness sets, a Giant Kubb set, GoPro camera, Bluetooth party speaker, circus light pop-up tent and kid's educational toys.

Borrowing from the Library of Things is simple. Patrons can choose a display case from the dedicated shelves near the children’s area and take it to the front counter, where staff will retrieve and issue the item to them.

Library of Things items are free to borrow for two weeks, can be placed on hold, renewed, and must be returned to the front counter during staffed opening hours.

MCHL welcomes community suggestions for future additions, helping shape a collection that reflects local interests and provides new ways for people to learn, create and connect.
