Hidden Stacks, Big Bargains

Behind the library shelves, tucked away in a storage room, boxes upon boxes of books, puzzles, DVDs, toys, and forgotten treasures are waiting for their next chapter.

Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) is opening the doors to its much-anticipated Annual Book Sale, giving the public the chance to uncover incredible bargains while offering a glimpse into how library collections are carefully refreshed and renewed.

“To keep the collection fresh and relevant, we regularly make room for new books and materials. This sale gives the community the opportunity to pick up quality items at fantastic prices, while helping the library continue evolving to meet the changing needs and interests of our readers,” says Kirsty Meads, MCHL Content Specialist.

From well-loved novels and children’s books to DVDs, puzzles, toys and miscellaneous items, there will be something for everyone, with many books priced at $3 or less.

Some items are duplicate copies, while others have simply reached the end of their time in the active collection, but all are ready for a second life beyond Te Āhuru Mōwai’s shelves.

Library collections grow quickly, with new releases arriving regularly throughout the year. To make room and keep collections relevant, libraries regularly “weed” their shelves (the professional term for retiring outdated, damaged, underused, or surplus items). Weeding is an essential part of maintaining a modern, useful, and appealing library collection for the community.

Rather than letting these items gather dust in storage, MCHL’s Annual Book Sale gives the community the opportunity to rediscover them, reuse them, and enjoy them all over again.

The sale will run at Te Āhuru Mōwai, 64 Stafford Street, Feilding, from 9.30am daily beginning Saturday 27 June through to Saturday 4 July (closed Sunday 28 June), or until all items are sold.

With most items priced between 50 cents and up to $10, bargain hunters are encouraged to arrive early, bring a tote or a box, and prepare to dig through shelves and stacks for hidden gems.
